Congressman Glenn Nye

 

Our Incumbent Democratic Congressman Glenn Nye will face a tough re-election challenge in November.  The campaign is getting underway, with Jennifer Koch joining Glenn as Campaign Director.   Shore Democrats will welcome back Nye's Field Director, Jonas Courey, who helped with State Senator Ralph Northam's successful campaign in 2007.

Below is a fact sheet on Congressman Nye's voting record so far on key legislation:

 

Helping Students Go to College

The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009 was the largest investment in education in this country’s history. Congressman Nye voted to increase the maximum annual Pell Grant Scholarship this year to $5,550 and will increase annually to compensate for inflation.  This bill also creates a Direct Loan Program, taking private companies out from between federal loans and students.  Additionally, the bill provides for a cap on the interest rates for these loans.
Rebuilding the Economy & Creating Jobs
Congressman Nye supported President Obama’s recovery act which includes various individual and business tax cuts as well as energy, environment, transportation, and health care funding to stimulate the economy.

 

Protecting Main Street & Reforming Wall Street

The Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act creates a system to protect Americans from the risky business practices that directly led to the recession we are currently facing.  Congressman Nye believes that it is time to regulate large banks that have such a great influence on our economy to ensure that their decisions, do not negatively affect our entire country.

 

Helping Americans who Lose their Jobs

Congressman Nye supported HR 3548, the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act extends unemployment benefits from 13 to 14 weeks across the nation.  Additionally, we extended eligibility for unemployment benefits through February, 2010 and also extended COBRA for a total of 15 months if you lose your job.

 

Preventing and Punishing Hate Crimes

The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act provides federal assistance to states and local jurisdictions to prosecute hate crimes. Congressman Nye was proud to vote for such an Act.

 

Making Sure Children Can See Doctors

With the help of Congressman Nye’s vote, SCHIP Provides health coverage for more than 4 million children whose families cannot afford to provide health insurance for them.

 

Ensuring Equal Pay for Equal Work

With Congressman Nye’s support, The Lilly Ledbetter Act, HR 11 clarifies that a man or woman who is paid less than their peers is being discriminated against each time they are paid less.    Additionally, HR 12, The Paycheck Fairness Act amends the portion of the Equal Pay Act to revise remedies for, enforcement of, and exceptions to prohibitions against sex discrimination in the payment of wages.

 

Protecting you from Predatory Lending and Unfair Creditors

Congressman Nye voted for The Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act, HR 1728 which amends the Truth in Lending Act to create standards to protect Americans from predatory mortgage lenders.  In addition, the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act protects Americans from untenable credit card practices such as arbitrary interest rate increases, secret fees, and hidden restrictions.
