Governor Tim Kaine visited the Eastern Shore on February 4th as a candidate for the U.S. Senate.

During a 90 minute morning discussion with business and community leaders in Chincoteague, he presented his approach to ensuring the United States remains the global leader of the 21st century economy by investing in education, infrastructure, and workforce development. Nearby Wallops Island presented a great case study for his approach.

Gov. Kaine also heard concerns about local issues that could affect the tourism industry and the thousands of associated jobs on the Eastern Shore.

At 12:30 PM, the Accomack and Northampton Democratic Committees met for lunch and a meet and greet with Governor Kaine at the Sage Diner in Exmore.

Below is Paul Hirschbiel who will be running for Congress against Scott Rigell. He spoke of his background, with his emphasis on Early Childhood education. He described himself as a moderate with 4 “themes:”

1. Bring commonsense bi-partisan decision-making to DC.

2. Get deficits under control.

3. Continue to invest in American Education.

4. Support for our military vets and military families.

He is interested in local issues such as agriculture, aquaculture and Wallops. Hirschbiel then fielded questions from about Social Security, comments made by Gingrich on education, and the need for reinstating vocational education and high tech training in the high schools. He was asked about unemployment for disabled vets, and others in Accomack County, problems with the SOLs, No Child Left Behind, and discipline in the schools, the high suicide rates of vets, infrastructure problems, and the challenge of enforcing needed regulations without stalling business growth.
